Using Hemp Flower
The flowers are the most important parts of both the hemp and cannabis plants if you intend to smoke or extract cannabinoids.
Following the 2018 Farm Bill’s signing into law, hemp flowers, also known as CBD flowers, have found their way into the mainstream.
But what are hemp flowers?
Many people, including some cannabis connoisseurs, would be forgiven to admit they can’t tell the difference between marijuana and hemp flowers.
They have the same appearance, scent, and feel to some degree; however, they are different in composition and effects despite the many and obvious similarities.
It doesn’t help that the plants are varieties of the same species – Cannabis Sativa.
Now that hemp is legal and has widespread use, and you must know the difference between the two similar looking flowers.
This article takes a closer look into the hemp CBD flower, its differences with the marijuana buds, and how it is used.
What Is Hemp Flower?
CBD hemp flower refers to the flower (bud) that a female hemp plant produces on reaching maturity. Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa L plant with 0.3% or less delta 9 THC on a dry basis.
Although it may smell and feel the same as a marijuana bud, the CBD flower has low THC, which is not enough to cause psychotropic effects. It may, however, contain a high concentration of Cannabidiol. Some premium cultivars contain more than 25% CBD.
CBD, or Cannabidiol in full, is one of the 113 plus cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it doesn’t cause psychotropic effects or “high” associated with marijuana use.
CBD is the main cannabinoid extracted from hemp flowers. Still, the plant also contains other beneficial cannabinoids such as CBD, CBC, CBN, among other compounds such as terpenes that may be useful in your body.
Differences With Marijuana Buds
As we have already stated, hemp flowers may appear, feel, and smell like marijuana buds. However, they are different in the cannabinoid makeup and the effects they cause.
Hemp flower, for one, only contains 0.3% delta-9 THC, which is practically zero as it cannot cause any intoxicating effects.
Marijuana buds, on the other hand, may contain very high delta 9 THC levels. Some premium cultivars have been carefully bred to produce levels above 30%, with some even reaching 35%.
CBD hemp flowers contain high levels of CBD, which can be extracted and sold as CBD oil. Marijuana buds may be propagated to produce high CBD levels while still having a potent level of THC.
Because of the low THC levels allowed in CBD hemp flowers, it is impossible to get high no matter the delivery method.
What’s The Deal With CBD Flower? Why Hemp Flower Is Getting Popular
There are different types of hemp products available in the market today. However, many producers do not sell full-spectrum products with all the compounds from the hemp plant intact. Most processors only isolate the CBD.
CBD isolate may not be very useful as users cannot experience the entourage effect on it alone. In addition to that, most extraction processes may spoil the integrity of the plant compounds and, in the process, reduce their benefits.
To ensure they are getting all the benefits that the hemp plant offers, some users prefer to use the hemp directly in its original form as it is harvested.
CBD flowers are harvested, dried, packaged, and sold without any processing. This preserves all the compounds in the hemp plant, including all cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.
However, that doesn’t mean that you will benefit just because the flower is not processed. Remember, not all hemp flowers are high grade; some may be from inferior quality hemp; therefore, they have no significant benefits.
How Can You Use Hemp Flowers?
Just like marijuana, there are different ways to consume CBD flowers.
The most popular delivery method is smoking, where the bud is broken down and rolled into a joint, lit, and you inhale the smoke and cannabinoids.
Smoking delivers the effects (benefits) of the CBD flower faster than other delivery methods. Effects may kick within 2 or 3 minutes after the first puff, but typically within 10 minutes.
However, it may not be the best consumption method as the smoke may contain harmful compounds that may irritate the throat and lungs.
To avoid that, you may use vaporizers that do not produce harsh smoke but keep the benefits and fast onset.
You can also use hemp flower to make edibles by mixing with food. This method is discreet and masks the taste and scent. However, it includes an extra step; decarboxylation.
Just like marijuana, directly adding the hemp flower to food may not be effective. You have to activate the CBD and other cannabinoids in the bud first.
Decarboxylation involves applying heat to the CBD hemp flower to convert CBDA to CBD.
In the original flower, CBD occurs as CBDA, a molecule with a carboxyl group. By heating (such as during smoking), the CBDA loses the carboxyl group and becomes CBD, the compound that we all have grown to love.
To avoid this hassle, most people use CBD products from reputable producers who use high-quality extraction methods that retain cannabinoids and terpenes’ integrity.
